The Galaxy S5 can be considered the flagship device of the entire fleet Android, not only because of the great expectations that surrounded him, but also for its features and price range. As mentioned, the expectations were enormous: Samsung will be able to meet users?

Design

We know, for Samsung design has never been the cornerstone of the Galaxy line. Of course, the models that have occurred in recent years have been refined from time to time, but from this point of view, Apple is still far to the quality of materials and construction details. This does not mean that the Galaxy S5 is an attractive little device, but does not add anything more than the charm of the S4.

The front of the device falls in the tradition of Samsung, but the back is that we find some interesting news. Instead of the usual plastic, smooth and shiny, Samsung has opted for a similar material to that of Note 3: a leatherette pleasant to the touch, can also provide a better grip, but less tacky the phablet from which he took inspiration. This option adds a little ‘character of the device, and gives a feeling of greater strength.

Nothing changes as far as the “Home” button and its function keys are identical to the previous model. Those expecting news in this regard will be disappointed, even if the new full-screen mode KitKat will hide the function keys that appear on the bottom of the screen.

The screen is 5.1 inches, so slightly larger than the previous model. The resolution is 1080 × 1920, with a clarity of image and a pixel density of remarkable. Samsung said to have improved color rendering and their brightness, but as long as we fail to do specific tests will be hard to tell if he’s right or not. A novelty is certain: the new screen S5 is dynamic, which means that it fits the type of outdoor light, going to balance the colors depending on the situation. Even the viewing angles are excellent.

Another new feature, the device will be available in four different colors and, above all, is water resistant, but only 9 feet deep and 30 minutes.

The fingerprint

And here it is now confirmed and announced unofficially: Samsung has also decided to incorporate in its Galaxy S5 a fingerprint reader. Unlike the iPhone 5s, this player has been included in the Home button, but the user must perform a swipe upward, and touch the screen to activate the device. The fingerprint will also have more advanced features, as it will allow you to hide private images and make mobile payments (features not yet enabled).

The camera

The Galaxy S5 is equipped with a new camera with LED flash and 16mpx, surprise, an integrated heart rate monitor. That’s right, the Galaxy S5 is able to control the heartbeat simply by placing your finger on a sensor located right next to the rear camera, a short distance from the lens.

In addition to a higher resolution, the camera is equipped with autofocus and super-fast.Do not miss the new features, like the ability to take pictures and change the focus at a later time. Also new is the HDR mode, making it possible to have a preview of how the image will be the active function. The interesting thing is that the HDR mode can also be activated during shooting multiple.

As for the video, you can now record them as 4K, which now seems to have become a standard for high-end smartphones. Even the video can be recorded using the HDR mode active, so as to  improve  the final yield of the above colors in certain light conditions.

Interface and functionality

Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface has always been the subject of criticism by many users for its looks too classic and inconsistent. The Galaxy S5 introduces a new version, new and improved in several respects, although in some cases there are still flaws in the previous version.

With KitKat 4.4, the Galaxy S5 has a more minimal graphics and flat, with a simpler interface to the user. Icons, buttons and other elements have been simplified in order to make the software more modern. The colors have been scaled back, and this gives a more professional look TouchWiz. Obviously there are little touches, such as new effects and little animations when you tap the icon, but in general also the S4 users will recognize many elements and similarities. Evolution, not revolution. There are always several pages where you can place widgets and icons, but also a new homescreen with Magazine My feature already available on other Samsung. In essence, it is a sort of aggregator of news and social updates, a little ‘how do BlinkFeed HTC and Flipboard. The main menu (App Launcher) is quite similar to the old one, although it has been improved graphically in some spots. The Phone and Messages app as remained virtually unchanged.

Hardware

The Galaxy S5 has a Snapdragon processor 801, equipped with new Qualcomm chip. This chip is based on the 400 quad core Krait with Adreno 330 GPU. According to the manufacturer, this processor provides a 14% improvement in performance compared all’S4 and 28% for graphics performance.

This processor also provides a 45% improvement in the processing speed of the camera’s sensor. Really impressive.

In terms of memory, we 2GB of RAM, more than enough for the majority of the operations that a phone must perform.

The battery 2,800 mAh should secure 10 hours of web browsing and video playback 12.

Conclusions

The Galaxy S5 has finally been announced in front of hundreds of journalists eagerly waiting. The terminal is great, a refinement of the previous one, but it seems that it is impossible to please users and experts in the field: in this case, as has happened recently with the iPhone, it lacks the “wow” factor, that function “killer” capable of transform from a smartphone, “interesting” to “essential.”

Everything is better than the previous model, but nothing is so “nice” to do a miracle. In short, Apple has the great advantage of being able to present a device with some new unpublished, without having to chase some function impossible to replicate in a few months.

The overall feel of this S5, in fact, is that of a phone that is likely to tire users, especially those who have already had a S3 or S4 and who may opt for other shores, Android, iOS or Windows Phone.

In any case, April 11, we can finally prove the Galaxy S5, since that is the date chosen by Samsung for marketing in 150 countries. No pricing information.
